What are Microgreens?

Microgreens are live, functional food, as they contain a wide range of vital nutrients ( eg vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and enzymes) Just by eating a handful of Red cabbage microgreens gives up to 40 times more vitamin E than its mature ones. Microgreens are excellent sources of high-quality protein and are easy to digest. They are live multivitamin tablets available in nature.

At first glance, microgreens look like sprouts but they are the seedlings of various vegetables that are harvested at an early growth stage. Microgreens are a superfood rich in macro and

micronutrients. Even a handful of microgreens are enough to energize your salads and wraps.

Why grow microgreens at home?

Microgreens can be grown organically in your own small place. This will not only save money but also teach you to grow plants at a small-scale in an urban setting.

  • Microgreens are rich in vitamins and minerals that we can consume fresh, instead of popping vitamin supplements. Hence growing them by yourselves is ideal.

What are the health benefits of microgreens?

They are densely packed with vitamins and minerals. Hence, when added to any kind of food they increase its nutritional value:

  • Reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases - rich in fiber and vitamin K, microgreens reduce blood pressure and increase heart health

  • Reduce the risk of cancer - As per a research published in the journal Future of Oncology, sulforaphane, a compound found in broccoli microgreens, has the potential to target cancer stem cells.

Program Instructor: 

Sonal Shet (B.Sc - Botany, zoology, and chemistry, M.Sc - Medical Biochemistry, Certificate of Food and nutrition - IGNOU) - Passionate about gardening since childhood, Sonal lost touch with it after moving to an urban setting. Her interest took her to adopt a plant-based diet, exploring, studying, and growing her own greens. She is working incessantly towards spreading the word about microgreens and encouraging & skilling up people to grow them in their own spaces.
