Gujiya is a must-have during the Holi festival in most North Indian homes. Traditionally made with maida and deep-fried in oil. Here is an attempt to make a healthier and less sinful way to indulge in this delicacy. It was inspired by recipes found from other health websites and recipes of gluten-free flours.
Travel Friendly Sweet Poha- Dairy free!
When travelling it is usually very difficult to find healthy options to pamper the occasional sweet tooth. This is a dish inspired by my mom, similar to the ready-to-eat-savory-poha-travel-friendly . Carry this and make yourself a warm halwa in the middle of nowhere! Make ladoos or just have spoonfuls as it is. Keep the mix ready and stored in your refrigerator to make any time. Works well for sudden guests or to pack a lunch box surprise treat.

Indian festivals always come with their specific food treats. And they are usually based on the seasonal and regional; availabilityof ingredients and the crop cycles. According to the Hindu calendar the full moon day of every month has a certain significance. The full moon day in January is celebrated as a day to worship Lord Shiva as Nataraja. It is celebarated as Thiruvadarai in Tamil nadu and Kerala. Here is a sweet dish that is offered to Lord Shiva on this occasion. It is served with a spicy mixed vegetable curry.

When I saw the videos of raw cookie dough recipes I saw most of them had oats, butter, eggs, and plain flour. I was tempted to create a similar recipe without the above. Thus was born this healthful version of cookie dough. Do give it a try.
Puffed Poha In Jaggery Syrup/ Karthigai Pori – Dairy-Free!
Karthika Deepam is a festival of lights that is observed by Hindus of Tamil Nadu, Sri Lanka, and Kerala. It falls between mid-November to mid-December it occurs on the day when the moon is in conjunction with the constellation Karthigai (Pleiades) and is also related to Karthik Purnima. It is celebrated with lighting clay lamps around the house. This festival is also celebrated to commemorate the bonding between brothers and sisters in South India(analogous to Bhaiya-Dhuj and Raakhi). Sisters pray for the prosperity and success of their brothers and light lamps to mark the occasion. Like with all Indian festivals we have specific food offerings made on this occasion too. It is puffed rice(Nel Pori) and puffed poha (Aval Pori)coated in jaggery syrup and shaped into balls. Somewhat like our chikkis in a different shape.

Turmeric Leaves Rice Dumplings – dairy-free!
Patoli is a traditional dessert made in parts of Karnataka and Konkan, infused with the earthy fragrance of turmeric. A similar dish in Kerala is made on banana leaves and is called ela ada. When I saw the turmeric plant in my garden I was reminded of this dish and its aroma. It is made with simple ingredients and is full of flavor with the goodness of coconut and jaggery.
Sama Paal Kozhukattai/ Sama dumplings kheer - Dairy- free, Kheer!
Paal kozhukattai is a traditional dessert made of rice dumplings in a milk and coconut milk mixture sweetened with sugar. It comes from the Chettinad Cuisine of Tamilnadu. It can be enjoyed with millet flour, coconut milk and jaggery in place of sugar.
Brown Rice Pais or Brown Rice Semi-solid Kheer
As discussed earlier brown rice has a lot of health benefits. health benefits are largely due to it being a whole grain. According to various research studies conducted before, the fibre content in brown rice helps to lower cholesterol, helps in elimination of waste through the digestive tract thus increasing the peristalsis, promotes fullness which could help in reduction of body weight and could help in the management of obesity, and may help prevent in the formation of blood clots. Brown rice is considered a low "glycemic index" food which could be beneficial in the management of Diabetes. Brown rice is also rich in Vitamin B complex.

Arrowroot Halwa (Koovaiyan Pitti Halvo) - Sugar free
Arrowroot is a plant very often found in the coastal areas. The rhizome of the plant is used and this is very similar appearance to turmeric plant. People use starch taken from the root and rhizome (underground stem) to make medicine. Arrowroot has many medicinal properties. Arrowroot is often used as a nutritional food for infants and for people especially recovering from illness. Arrowroot is very useful in the treatment of intestinal and stomach ailments. This very effective in solidifying the stools and hence it is very effective in treating loose motions or diarrhoea. Direct application of rhizome gives a soothing effect on the gums. Cookies are made out of this rhizome and commonly available in the market. Otherwise, as in foods, arrowroot may be used as an ingredient in cooking. Arrowroot is often replaced with cheaper starches, including potato, corn, wheat, or rice starch.

Ground and frozen raw banana popsicle with the goodness of dates and cacao nibs. This was made as a surprise by my 14-year-old and for a change, I enjoyed eating a snack like a proud mother.
