Discovery of Health Issues
Since the time I could remember, I recall myself sneezing all the time. Even after numerous consultations with doctors, the cause for my ailment was not discovered and I kept taking ‘cetirizine’ tablets to suppress the symptoms of ‘Cold’. By the time I was 19, I was taking 1 cetirizine every day. As side-effects of the medicines, I developed severe headaches, drowsiness, and lowered immunity. My thyroid gland got imbalanced, I gained a lot of weight, and started medication for it too. Popping pills became an unending vicious cycle.
I was a student of Nutrition Science and it helped me lose a bit of weight but all those medications and mental stress had deteriorated my looks and health. In 2014, I gave birth to my son after a stressful pregnancy but following nutrition science, I always maintained a healthy diet and practiced meditation. At the time of my son’s birth I was 76 kilograms. During the next few months I lost around 10 kilograms through my diet and continued the routine till 2016. However, it wasn’t enough.
The Turning Point
In 2016, I went back to work after my mommy sabbatical. Balancing work and personal life started causing distress to my digestive system and I developed gastric issues. One day I observed a couple of lumps in my breast! It was a scary situation but thankfully the cancer test came negative.
That’s when I decided to prioritize my health first and rectify myself.
The Battle Starts
Due to my knowledge of nutrition science I knew that medicines were not the answer to my health problems. I stopped consuming them for thyroid and cold. I also decided to make some changes in my diet.
I had quit milk long ago due to acidity issues. Gradually, I eliminated Ghee from my diet as I was trying to lose weight. I started working out regularly.
In October 2016, I started eliminating acidity-causing foods from my diet. I had the understanding that fruits are light on the stomach, low on calories and have healthy carbs, so I increased their intake and started having breakfast of fruits, seeds, and whole grains, lunch of vegetable salad along with dal or soup and dinner of whole rice or chapati with sambhar.
I quit tea, coffee and moved to drinking green tea. I also started drinking Apple cider vinegar in the morning.
I switched to almond milk. I moved away from curd and paneer as they were triggering acidity and thyroid issues.
The progression in my diet was gradual. By 2017, I had moved on to walking at least 15,000 steps a day and eating more natural foods. I started eating only organic food, cooked using only cold-pressed oil or very less oil.
I lost some weight and weaned-off medicines. All this was a dream coming true for me. I had started looking slim and feeling healthy.
Another Challenge
In June 2019, another lump appeared in my breast and a big lump on my forehead, but this time I was not scared. In 2018, my cousin and a natural health enthusiast, Smitha Hemadri had introduced me to her holistic health group. Members of the group followed a healthy lifestyle under her guidance. Seeing all of them working hard on their health journeys encouraged me to deal with the lumps in a natural way.
With constant motivation from Smitha’s group, I planned a diet on my own.
The Therapy
From my past experience, I knew that medicines were not the answer to my problem and I needed to flush out toxins from my body in order to get rid of these lumps.
I was already following a diet that consisted mostly of fruits and vegetables. To take it a step further as per nature cure, I decided to eat only raw fruits and vegetables for some time and cleanse my body internally.
My day started with a glass of detox water - Water with ginger, lemon, or some vegetable like cucumber or tomato dipped in it.
After that I used to go for my daily walk and then drink a glass of fresh juice - made up of ash gourd, watermelon, muskmelon, or any seasonal fruit.
After a filling lunch of fresh fruits, if I felt hungry in the evening I used to eat one banana or papaya.
A dinner of raw vegetable salad, made of, cucumber, carrot, capsicum, cabbage or any other easily available seasonal vegetable concluded my day
I quit coffee and started drinking herbal tea. A concoction of spiced water (spices soaked in water for few hours) and jaggery was also a part of my diet.
I followed this for almost 45 days. It was tough. But I was determined to follow it. And it worked! My lumps melted away. My body had healed itself, through the power of nature. Now I didn’t need any surgical removal of lumps.
The Impact
Now I am 31, and maintain a dream weight of 51 kilograms. I walk for more than 1 hour, run continuously for 20 – 30 minutes, and am able to do many yoga postures and exercises which I wouldn’t think of doing a few years ago. The lifestyle and diet changes improved my overall health.
I continue to follow the nature cure diet with 1 cooked meal at night and have included cold-pressed oils, organic food in my family’s routine also.
I look forward to growing stronger and am thankful to the holistic health group by Smitha Hemadri. I am glad that the knowledge of nutrition helped me rectify my health problems and enabled me to lead a healthy life. I encourage people to follow a simple and holistic lifestyle, eating the right amount of raw foods, fruits, and follow an exercise routine.
