What is infertility?
Infertility can be defined as the inability of a couple to achieve a pregnancy within a year, even after repeated intercourse. Infertility affects about one in 10 couples. It is becoming increasingly common because people are waiting longer to marry and have a child. The age of marriage is getting progressively late due to various aspects; studying longer for a fruitful career, married partners living in far off places due to jobs etc. The cause of infertility may be due to problems in the man or woman or both. Problems with sperm, ovulation or the fallopian tubes each account for almost one-third of the infertility cases. Infertility can also be caused by problems of mucus in the cervix or by unidentified factors.
The issue of azoospermia
Nature cure can resolve the issue of infertility for both man and woman. In this article, we detail a case of infertility due to Azoospermia, which is a medical condition of a man whose semen contains no sperm. "A patient of azoospermia from an orthodox family approached. So a direct Gynecological checkup of his wife was not possible. The patient was sent for semen examination and reports suggested Azoospermia. But the pathologist suggested another test before announcing affirmatively. So re-examination after a week confirmed azoospermia with pus cells. Now a biopsy was also suggested, which was denied. The doctor had no hope for improvement of the case as there was no positive or conclusive treatment in allopathy.”
He was given the following suggestions:-
1. Not to take any medicine while Nature Cure was being practised. He had already taken a number of medicines during his childhood for various diseases.
2. To give up all addictions and bad habits. He was addicted to betel nuts and tea. He was drinking tea ten times a day or whenever offered.
3. To give up extra salt and take very little salt. He was used to taking good amounts of extra salt in meals soda-lemon, buttermilk, fruit salads.
4. To eschew all animal products, milk, buttermilk, sweets and namkeens, which were eaten routinely in meals.
5. Avoiding all in-between snacking.
He was advised the following diet therapy:
• 70, 80 ml juice either of bael patra or ash gourd or 200ml of cucumber.
• Breakfast of a mono-diet of any seasonal fruits along with 1/4th of a coconut.
• For lunch, vegetables cooked conservatively without spices and condiments or oil, with one or two roti/small bowl rice.
• Cane sugar juice or fruit juice in the afternoon.
• Spinal bath for 30 minutes twice at 8 a.m. and 8 p.m.
• Dinner of fruits and 1/4th of a coconut.
• Early morning exposure to sun and a brisk walk.
After about 50 to 60 days, he was sent for semen tests which reported no evidence of azoospermia. His wife duly conceived and delivered a baby girl. The whole family was greatly relieved and happy.
The scientific basis of the treatment
• The scientific basis of the above mentioned natural diet is in accordance with the composition of semen.
• Semen is alkaline with a pH of 7.7 due to mainly prostatic secretion.
• It contains a good amount of fructose which is an important source of energy for spermatozoa. Fructose is formed in the seminal vesicles.
• It contains several trace metals e.g.iron, copper, zinc and magnesium.
Fruits and vegetables are alkaline in nature and contain the necessary amount of fructose. This was the reason for advising a diet high in fruits and vegetables.
A patient with problems in sperm production should take tepid or cold water bath and spinal bath. He must avoid hot baths and must discard tight-fitting, tight jeans, synthetic, clothing and shoes, deodorant, cosmetics, perfumes, electric blankets. The scientific basis for the application of this natural local treatment is that in the scrotum, the testicles are on an average 2-degree Celsius cooler than the body temperature. When testes are exposed for prolonged periods to a temperature higher than the body temperature, the maturation of the sperm is arrested and sperm density is reduced. It would have been quite advisable if his wife were put to the same diet regime to rule out any shortfall.
Effect of medicines
The scientific basis for giving up all drugs and other enervating substances is as under:-
• The drugs used for treatment are orally active chemical compounds that stop sperm production.
• Nitrofurans which are powerful antibiotics used in the treatment of intestinal amoebae can produce complete suppression of sperm count.
• Dinitropyrrole used in some medicines can impair spermatogenesis.
• Ethanol (used as a preservative and Sulfonamides; used to treat bacterial infections) from exogenous sources have also been found in seminal fluid. Adverse condition is more likely to be the addition of a deleterious constituent to the seminal fluid than the deletion of some normally present. These conditions of the seminal fluid medium could influence the spermatozoal surface.
Note: With some alternatives in diet and hydropathic applications, and lifestyle changes, barrenness can also be treated very effectively; in fact, many cases of barrenness have been treated successfully.
