The whole Covid 19 situation has resulted in jobs loss for many people. In these challenging times, you can either keep worrying about the job or be strong and take full ownership of getting hired on your own.
Through this article I wish to explain the latter.
How can you create a job for yourself?
If you are committed to work hard and ready to take full accountability of the results, you can create a role for yourself at any organisation. This concept is called ‘Becoming an Intrapreneur’ in a Company that you wish to work for.
Let me start with the story of a person who got hired as a CEO, without being approached by the company. This information came from credible sources:
Sometime in 2015 Uber was looking for a country CEO for India. Its Co-founder Travis Kalanick had just started the search. Within a few weeks Amit Jain got the role to lead Uber India operations. How did that happen?
Amit had submitted a complete plan to Travis on his own, detailing how he would grow & manage Uber operations in India and South Asia in the next 5 years, if chosen for the role. Travis was super impressed with the self-initiated action taken by Amit. It ticked almost every requirement to test Amit’s commitment. The result was obvious, Amit got the role!
Now, this is not something many people usually do. They depend on others to get jobs and salary increments.
How can you do the same?
Every business or profession looks for growth. If you contribute to the growth, you can create a requirement for yourself, and hence the new role:
Do an in-depth analysis of value creation opportunities in a company
See how you can contribute in creating or managing that value
Basis this, create a detailed plan of action and approach the company
A business leader appreciates the thought and effort you put into growing that business without even being hired
It reflects that you are keen to take the responsibility and ownership of the result
There is no better attribute in a team member
Any business leader would be happy to give you the opportunity
This work is the easiest for Sales and Marketing people who can make a plan for generating additional revenue for the business from their smart work and new ideas. However, other verticals can also do the same with operations growth, cost savings or indirect revenue growth.
Think out of the box
Due to the COVID situation many new opportunities are arising in various sectors. Companies are either changing their business strategy (moving offline to online) or some industries, such as Healthcare are getting more customers. Identify such sectors or organisations and think about creating value for them through your skill sets.
The Wellcure Example
We, being, an early stage company, are approached by many people for different roles. As we have a set growth-plan, the number of positions planned are limited. However, anyone who can think of value creation opportunities or sales growth opportunities, can do some research about us, send us their questions and make a plan that they would like to execute. Include a logical compensation for yourself, derived out of the plan.

Support Functions (Finance, HR, Operations etc.) - Calculate the amount of work required in the company. Suggest how you can save the costs and earn your salary out of it. It will be easier for you to get hired if you commit to create value for them. Anyone who just bothers about getting paid for the efforts without any accountability to results, is only suitable to well funded & large companies.
This might sound difficult but it is better than blaming the world situation and waiting for some opportunity to arrive at your doorstep.
