How Mental Disorders are formed

What is a mental disorder?
Mental Disorder is a disease at the mind level. Like distress and disease, it is also caused by an imbalance in the Emotion-Body-Mind trio. The good news is that any simple, chronic or complex form of mental disorder is easy to reverse.
Based on the book - 'Meditation the cure', where the complete science and techniques are detailed out for any patient (care giver) to start reversing disorders at home, we have been helping patients with all kind of disorders.
Here are facts and science which trigger mental disorder in a person: -
- When an event(s) of your life has bigger impact than your faith in life, it triggers disappointment. Disappointment leads to hopelessness.
- Hopelessness triggers negative emotions within, which the mind tries to control and keep inside.
- State of hopelessness kills curiosity, which is disconnection with mystery; leading a person to feel unattended and unsupported.
- At energy level, this causes massive disruption to the flow of energy- the 7-chakra system.
- This requires mind to work harder to keep energies and emotions in check.
- This disrupts breathing and starts to affect the chemistry of a body. This in-turn affects sleep and sexuality.
- This is the state of imbalance in the spirit-body-mind trio.
Why faith is the key?
A strong mind can keep the disappointments of life and still have the survival instinct. However, a holistic or artistic person, whose motivation does not lie in the routine and mundane survival, struggles with such disappointments in life and lands up suffering with mental disorder, in such situations. This is a slow and gradual process. Often one event is not enough to set the disorder. Grounding mechanism to let out the pressure plays a vital part in preventing disorder. Earlier, joint family, faith and community provided with that grounding mechanism.
Faith is trust in the unknown and trust is faith in the known
Faith in God is to have faith in unknown. It has offered us the strength to trust future. This meant trusting life in those moments when events created the “No-hope” situations.
Joint families or the support of family has always acted as insurance in such a situation. Family provided us with a supply of multiple layers of hope and love in such situations: this offered acceptance of self, even when we made mistakes. Imperfection was normal and the pressure to evolve and survive was not as much that it had the power to erode our faith in life and trust in self.
What triggers mental disorders?
The few common examples for situations which trigger mental disorder are as follows:
- The pressure on a child to perform in academics and live up to the expectation of parents.
- Death of a loved one (i.e. grandparents, parents) on which you did not cry.
- Relationship break ups or feeling stuck in a situation such as job, relationship, failure in clearing professional exams.
- Growing up, away from parents/ feeling rejected as a child.
This is where the seeds of disorders are sown in the system, if no grounding mechanism is provided in order to release this pressure. Thus, it gets stored in the body and more of such events keep increasing, accumulating and gets stored inside. These, then imbalance the system and in order to balance the stored energy within, disorder surfaces to stabilize self.
Every culture has rituals to deal with loss or pressure. In case of death in the family, India has tradition of 13 days of living in grieving to ground it. Friends and society make sure everyone cries and releases the sadness. Religious, yet spiritual chants and worshiping is designed to give wisdom to the grieving family to let go of attachment and restore faith in life.
If the grounding time is not given, depression sets in. Depression is a state in which person is making all efforts to balance between restoring faith in life and keeping pressure under control. It is last attempt by the person to survive as a normal being.
For a person in depression, the slightest exposure to negative nature may be strong enough to break the survival instinct of the person and to set the path for a more serious mental disorder such as OCD, Bipolar Disorder or Schizophrenia. If the ego is stronger, then in order to survive such losses or pressure, a person may get into another kind of disorder such as OCPD, anger disorder, hyperactive disorder, addiction to people, sex or substance etc. or simply being destructive for self or for others.
Thus, if one were to understand the science of breathing and follow techniques of meditation as developed by us, then in our experience, once would reach the root cause the state of disorder and begin stabilizing and establishing a coherent balance within.
