COVID-19 Pandemic - Making The Best Of The Worst Of Times
The global health crisis brought on to us by the COVID-19 virus has many perspectives. If you did not use extended lockdowns to introspect, analyze your life and the world around you, you are “Vimoodha” - not just a fool, but a colossal one. I call it a colossal compassion crisis. Because we, humans have endlessly and ruthlessly exploited natural environmental resources, animals, and each other to the point where our actions have boomeranged on us. It is also the law of nature or call it Karma - as you sow so shall you reap. We have brought upon ourselves our own misfortunes. Now Nature has pushed us back from all spheres of life - work, entertainment, education, and others. So that Nature and animals can get a breather and reclaim their lost, encroached upon spaces. Many people are still in bewilderment at why the pandemic? Please see how the collective actions of the masses have brought forth this crisis and examine your actions, choices - how good or bad t
Here's What You Need To Know About Mental Health & Counseling
The adjective - Mental - comes from the word, mind. Hence this term denotes the 'health of the mind'. Mind comprises thoughts and emotions that manifest in external behavior. Hence, in order to understand mental health we need to examine the quality of one's Thoughts - how rational are they, how much are they reality-based and how functional are they. And Emotions - are they appropriate to the situation, in type and intensity? And Behavior - is it functional and non-disruptive? Mental Health is often neglected due to the lack of basic education about it, the misinformation that's often propagated in its name, and the stigma around it. People often judge someone who wants to see a psychologist/psychiatrist or is undergoing therapy. This makes people shy away from admitting their difficulties and the need for help, out of embarrassment. No one questions that if we can consult a doctor for ailments of the body, then why can't one seek help for the ailmen
The Art Of Living Well & Being 'Truly' Fine
What is the most common response when people ask each other ‘how are you'? - I am fine! Is it truly so or is it merely out of convenience that we say this? Do we even know the truth for ourselves? Life and the world around us constantly make demands from us. There are so many pressures acting on us from the inside (health, moods, hunger and sexuality) and the outside (environment, financial, social, work, family). Sometimes we seem caught up in a multitude of roles and obligations devoting our time and resources, only to end up feeling frustrated, disillusioned and stressed. I am not saying that we should wear our problems on our sleeve,or wash our dirty linen in public. That would make one totally unpopular and people may even avoid us if we excessively mourn in public about our problems. Ella Wheeler Cox says beautifully in her poem ‘laugh and the world laughs with you, cry and you cry alone'. It is not an insensitive world
How Does Health Of Your Organs Affect Your Emotional Health?
(From the book THE ASTHMA CURE by Tarika Ahuja) Macrobiotics is a science that helps us understand the source and movement of energy around us: how we fit in as individuals, into the environment, how our body types, climate, age, thinking, consciousness, food, etc are linked with nature. Through this, we can learn and refine our sensibility about the phenomenon that runs all life on the planet. We can use this understanding to work towards our health goals, a common purpose, or even a universal cause. One phenomenon emerging out of macrobiotics is the link between natural elements and our organs. Various organ systems in our bodies, and the foods that impact these organs, are associated with different natural elements. Let's understand how our organs affect our emotional health, and how you can nourish specific organs to balance your emotions. Liver & Gall Bladder The element of ‘wood' is associated with the function of the liver and ga
Can Your Feelings About Sex & Sexuality Impact Your Psychology?
Sex is the very act that created us. Something that creates life is definitely a big deal! After all, in the world, all actions spring from the basic sexual act. Paulo Coelho captures it beautifully in his novel Eleven Minutes, which, for those who haven't read the book, is the time for the average sexual act. Yes, the act and source of life has been reduced to an industry in today's world. What is worse is that our society has created taboos, dogmas, superstitions, and overall confusion around it. Psychology embraces sex as a life instinct - the Eros. This instinct starts functioning in childhood as a natural curiosity about one's body and environment, repression of which could pose serious problems to the individual's psyche. Spirituality talks about celibacy/ brahmacharya or even propagates monogamy through Grihasthashram-life of a householder. Let us examine our natural feelings about sex and sexuality at an individual level, keepin
Live Better With Increased Sense & Sensitivity
Sensitivity is a survival trait that lets you be more observant, see the real nature of things and people, and act accordingly “It has always been a mystery to me, how men can feel themselves honored by the humiliation of their fellow beings” - M K Gandhi Many of us observe the deteriorated state of today's society - Rising costs of living, corruption, abuse of power, youngsters harming their precious health with colas & noodles. Cutting-edge technology and scientific advancement have made lives comfortable and better for most of us. But, it has also led to lifestyle diseases such as obesity, hypertension, and heart attacks. All of this is making a mark on our behavioral and emotional evolution. But, are we really sensitive towards this? A Disconnected & De-sensitized Society Anyone in the world is just a call away. The more there are tools to communicate, the less authentic communication there is. People are less aware of their own and ot

Just as in the animal kingdom there are the fierce carnivores, meek herbivores, and shrewd scavengers, similarly different humans have different temperaments. Some are humble, some are arrogant, some are patient and some have a short fuse. The animals have a collective nature. For example, all tigers are ferocious, all deer are timid. However, in humans, each person is unique and people don&

Inner Child Therapy: Let us breathe freely
Remember those days when we danced in the rain and our mothers allowed us to be free and spontaneous? Remember that time when we forgot little worries but life went on fine? Remember the beautiful walk in the mountains, where oxygen was low but our lungs were full and free? Where are those days gone now, when sleep was so fulfilling and deep? We all know about the fact that we store the emotions in our mind but we are totally oblivious to the fact that our mind is in sync with our body. The emotions which we store by getting affected from day to day activities are stored in various body parts. When our emotions are disturbed we start getting into the vicious cycle of pain and disease. In our body, everything works in harmony. Inner child therapy is all about getting in touch with that part of you which is storing a certain emotion - going back to the time when you experienced a feeling of guilt, when your trust was broken when you faced embarrassment or knowing where your ang

Anxiety in Children
What is anxiety? The word ‘anxiety' is commonly associated with the experience/feeling of nervousness, distress, apprehension, worry and may even have physical manifestations like sweating, nausea, tremors, headaches etc. Simply put, anxiety is our response to a trigger, which is usually something we are apprehensive about or scared of. The trigger may be real or imaginary. Interestingly, the physiological responses associated with anxiety are similar to the way our body responds to fear i.e. the flight-or-fight response. These essentially are a set of bodily changes (like increased heartbeat and blood pressure) that assist you in fighting or escaping as soon as a threat or danger is perceived. Is anxiety normal? Even in children? Anxiety, to some extent, is not only normal it is adaptive and has functional value. For example, if there is a real, physical threat in front of you then the feeling of anxiety will prompt you to do something about it (fight or es
Parent-Child Relationship
Today, the skillful use of praise and criticism to smooth parent-child relationships and increase harmony in the home seems more important than ever. Parents need not waste energy on crisis and confrontation that might have been avoided with more adept handling. Haim Ginott, author of "Between Parent and Child" and "Between Parents and teenagers", defines the goal of all criticism as the solution of a particular problem. Criticism that doesn't accomplish this goal has failed as a tool in family management and should be improved. In his book, Dr. Ginott insists that the following three rules are important when we criticize: Don't attack personally attributes Don't criticise character traits Deal with the situation at hand A friend whose son had a mishap with a ballpoint pen followed these rules with good results. Somehow, black permanent ink showed up one day, first on his shirt and jeans, then on the living room sofa. Such apparent c
How to Manage Your Emotions at Workplace for Better Results & Health
We all go through different emotions while working in the office. At times, these emotions overpower over intellect and make us behave in a negative manner. In this article, we want to discuss more on this topic and understand the simple measures that you can take to manage your emotions constructively. Why do you need to manage your emotions at work? Words and swords have the same letters and if used without any thought, they can create harm worse than swords. Once you start making a public display of your anger, frustration, unhappiness and disappointment a part of your conduct in office, it begins to affect your relationship with your colleagues as well. You are seen as a dissatisfied and pessimistic individual who drains people's energies with his/her negativity. They not only begin to avoid you in person but also detach themselves from projects in which you are involved. From the perspective of Nature Cure, these negatives emotions affect our vitality. When angr

Series of steps to follow to practice surrender The following are the steps that I follow which have personally helped me see results more often than not: Step1 - Gratitude for the present- Get your mind to the centre of your being – calm, peaceful, h
Part 2 - Preparing oneself for the art of surrendering
In Part1 of this series on the Art of surrendering, we understood the true meaning of surrendering and examples to understand it. In this article, we will learn to: Prepare to let go of the past ways of living that did not serve us. Learn newer ways of preparing mind and body, physically, emotionally and mentally for surrendering. Learn how to truly understand and implement surrender. Intuition - Voice from within “We must take care to not make the intellect our God. It cannot lead; it can only serve.” - Albert Einstein Key to surrender comes from your intuition also called the ‘Voice of the subconscious mind' and not the linear mind or the conscious mind. The higher the intensity of surrender and longer the practice, the more intuitive and open we become to deeper knowledge. The more we surrender or act based on what the intuition tells us, we see the results faster and the better we get at practising it. Intuition does not always

Conquer Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) Naturally
As the winter season begins with a bit of holiday cheer, many people feel a little “off” or "down”. People question themselves - “Is there something wrong with me?” “Why am I so unhappy?” Often, their bodies are just responding to the darker and colder days. This type of depression may be classified as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). What is the reason behind SAD? We are governed by circadian rhythms, our body's natural clock that helps regulate important functions, including sleep/wake cycles and mood. These rhythms shift during the onset of the winter season. Daytime gets shorter, reducing exposure to sunlight, yet our hectic schedules are unchanged and require us to keep going. This shift, depending on various factors namely genetics and body chemistry – affect mental health and could, in turn, have an impact on physical health creating a sense of sluggishness. It is also believed that a drop in serotonin in the
