Practical Techniques To Enhance Your Eye Health - Exclusively with Dr. M. Sathish Kumar
Do we take our vision casually? Many of us start giving attention to our health only when something goes wrong, and that holds true in the case of vision defects as well. If we take the health of our eyes for granted, they are sure to give us an alarm call soon.
Among the vision disorders, Myopia is the most prevalent condition in children and young adults. Increased screen-time, reading, competitive academic environment, and lack of outdoor activities are leading to various eye impairments, myopia leading the tally. Dr. M. Sathish Kumar, Founder, School for Perfect Vision, Coimbatore believes that "glasses only improve our vision and not the eyes". Lenses or glasses only refine your vision. The moment you remove them, you are unable to see clearly, isn’t it?
This statement reflects how most of us focus on vision correction and not the overall health of our eyes.
Eyes, like any other body part, need regular rest, exercise, a good diet, and relaxation to continue functioning to their full capacity. However, most of us forget to include eye health in our daily routine. Due to which we develop vision impairments at an age as early as 4-5 years. A study conducted in Delhi by AIIMS revealed that 1 in 6 or 17% of children, aged between 5 and 15 are myopic and 1 in 7 adults are shortsighted.
What if we tell you that there is a well researched and established way to reverse your vision defects and wean off spectacles?
Dr. Sathish Kumar has been working constantly towards the goal of eye health improvement in children and adults. He has developed a holistic program of vision improvement through exercises, eye massage, relaxation, and rejuvenation.Dr. Sathish Kumar says, "We, on a daily basis, commit a number of mistakes which impact our vision. However, they can be rectified with a conscious effort."
The Mistakes We Do
While we cannot stick to the universal recommendations of 1-2 hours of screen time in a day, our wrong usage of screens intensifies the eye damage:
We forget to blink while looking at a screen. Blinking is breathing for eyes, if it doesn’t happen frequently it strains the eyes
We ignore the effect of blue light emission on our eyes
Many of us position our laptop in a corner or against a wall. This means that our immediate vision beyond the screen gets obstructed and there is no far-vision. And this continuous short-distance vision impacts us.
We work in artificial light instead of natural light most of the time
Bright light in front of the eyes is damaging
We don’t always keep our screens at eye-level
Other Factors That Impact Eye Health
Staying outdoors and absorbing sunlight is important for the absorption of Vit.D, which affects the functioning of eyes
Ignoring to include Vit. A, E & K in our diet
Ignoring peripheral vision, how often do we rotate our eyes to the sides?
The Methodology
Dr. Sathish Kumar’s practice is based on the techniques developed by William Bates, the eminent 19th-century American ophthalmologist, who devised the Bates method of eye-exercises. Dr. Kumar has created the vision improvement program, combining the Bates method with the wisdom of some yoga traditions and his own therapeutic knowledge. He refines and customizes the techniques to suit different age groups and people with different degrees of eye defects.
The exercises and massages included in his program focus on relaxation and rejuvenation of eyes and mind. The all-encompassing routine trains the eyes to adapt to natural and dark light, peripheral vision, clarity in vision, depth perception, and field of vision. Someone suffering from myopia for a long time also benefits from these methods.
Besides myopia, Dr. Sathish Kumar’s method works on hypermetropia, squint, and other eye conditions that impact a flexible and improvable eye muscle. He is also working towards developing a routine for the prevention of cataract, as its reversal might not be feasible; for it is a structural condition needing surgical intervention.
School for Perfect Vision & Work with School Kids
Dr. Sathish Kumar started the School for Perfect Vision in Coimbatore in August 2016, with the mission of helping underprivileged school kids from Tamil Nadu in improving their vision. According to Dr. Kumar, many of these children are suffering from myopia at an early age because of a combination of factors:
Stringent and competitive academic routine leaves them hardly with any playtime in the sun
Kids in higher classes (10th-12th) get no playtime at all in schools and for almost 6-7 hours they stay indoors.
Some schools don’t even have an open playground due to space constraints
Usually in a classroom setting kids sit in ascending order of height, without ascertaining whether the tallest child sitting at the backseat has good enough vision or not.
Through his public awareness programs and rotary work, Dr. Sathish Kumar has been able to train several teachers with basic techniques to check students’ vision with a simple eye test. He has also educated them about creating better learning environments for kids which does not stress their eyes, such as:
Availability of ample light in the classroom
If possible, natural light should be falling on the black-board
One hour of playtime every day
How should be the artificial lighting inside the classroom
How the doors & windows can be utilized, etc.
How to counsel students with vision defects for their confidence, psyche, and future opportunities. Many of them stand ineligible for a career in armed forces and sports, which they had aimed for.
The School for Perfect Vision provides free-of-cost service to underprivileged school kids across Tamilnadu. Gradually, the school has evolved to providing service to adults. Today, Dr. Sathish Kumar and his team cater to a wide range of age groups, from 7 to 45 years. They also provide support services, such as Optometry, Diet Counseling, Naturopathy Consulting, and Psychological Counseling.
People who have benefited from Dr. Sathish Kumar’s therapy speak volumes about it.
Jahnavi Krishna says “After practicing the techniques from this program, I am able to manage a few tasks without my spectacles. Also, after wearing my glasses, I can see with more clarity. I have seen good improvement and now I have hope that I can definitely reduce my power”.
Ms. Shalu expresses her gratitude as, “Thank you, Dr. Sathish, for your valuable inputs and encouragement. This program has come to me at the right time. I am consistent with the eye exercises and plan to continue with them. I also plan to drastically reduce my mobile usage as I am quite aware of the havoc it’s playing on my eyes. Dr. Sathish even helped me how to go about doing that in a step by step manner. His support and positivity are admirable. High regards"
