Pain is an indicator as explained in the first part of the blog Do you understand pain?
You can ignore it, suppress it or actually do something about it by heeding the message of pain. For many people, pain can be a kick starter on the path to good health. So let us understand how to deal with pain and help our body. What specific actions can we take?
FOOD HABITS
- Are you eating at the wrong time not aligning with the circadian rhythm? Are your food habits erratic? Are you eating without hunger? These cause indigestion and build up toxins in the body.
- Are you overeating on acidic foods like deep fried foods, processed foods, too much dairy or non veg, overeating grains, too much tea, coffee or alcohol? Check our blog on acid-alkaline balance to learn more
- Are you undereating foods which nourish your body and restore the alkaline balance and keep the body hydrated like fruits and vegetables in raw form?
ACTIVITY
- Taking up a sport or exercise without proper warm up, cool down and rest inbetween can cause pain. Take up an exercise routine you like and do it the proper way.
- Are you spending too much time indoors slouched over your computer? The Sun is an important factor for pain relief and health. Get outdoors to soak in sunlight and fresh air.
- Check your posture – Wrong sitting and walking postures over a period of time disturbs the symmetry of the body and build up pressure causing pain.
EMOTIONS
- Address your emotional pains – Are you worried, angry, resentful, overthinking things etc? Mind and body are interconnected. Positive emotions like happiness can overcome pain.
In our health journeys section, you can check how people handled their pain and positive actions they took to become pain free.
A word of caution
In case you experience severe sudden pain in any part of the body, pain combined with inability to see, pain with vomiting, head injuries etc this calls for medical attention. Please get them checked by your doctor.
Assisting measures to deal with the pain
Yes, we understand - You don’t want philosophy when in pain. You are looking for some immediate measures to get respite from the pain. Try a few of the measures below while you work on lifestyle measures which will give you longer lasting relief.
- Use Hydrotherapy techniques.- Take two pieces of cotton cloth and two bowls – one filled with warm water and the other with cold water. Dip one cloth in warm water and keep it on the affected part for 3 minutes. Then use the other cloth dipped in cold water and keep it on for 1 minute. This completes one round. Do this for 4 rounds. This can be repeated many times during the day. The heat expands tissues and relieves pressure and the cold balances back the circulation.
- Deep and slow breathing. Visualize healing light flowing into the painful part, breathe out and let the pain go. Do it for a few minutes and end by sending love to the painful part and visualize it as strong and healthy again. Make it a regular practice.
- Have a lemon shot – A lemon shot is a mix of equal part of lemon and water. Gulp it down to alkalize your body and get rid of the pain.
- Gentle Massage – See if you can give a gentle massage to your body with your hands to get the blood and lymph fluids circulating well.
- Using distraction – Energy flows where thought goes. If our attention is all the time on pain, the perception of pain increases and makes us more miserable. Instead of this habit, cultivate a habit of healthy distraction – engage in activities which give you happiness – painting, listening to music, talking to someone, watching comedy shows, playing with your children. Live in the moment rather than letting pain dictate your fears.
Time, patience and nature can heal even the biggest of pains. So give yourself some self-love and compassion.
Tune back to your purpose. Think about the things you always wanted to do. Seize the thought to give you the motivation to live a life free of pain.
