
Oil Free Dal Tadka

Dal tadka and that too oil free! Flavour bhi health bhi.Yes, that's possible. Yet another favourite and staple item in all Indian households, done in simple oil free way. You can keep the process same, and do any daal of your liking. Watch the "Heal with Food" video by clicking the above picture to know more.The recipe here, soaks the daal overnight,which reduced the cook time to only 15-20 minutes next day, and that too without pressure cooker. This infact is a more healthful way to cook lentils, to ensure the nutrition is preserved. If you are in hurry do feel free to use pressure cooker, but do it the traditional way once, and you will realise its an easy switch to do.
Ingredients
- Arhar Dal : 1 bowl
- Onion: 1
- Tomatoes: 2-3
- Garlic Cloves: 5-6
- Dried Fenugreek leaves (kasuri methi): 2 tsp
- Red Chilli Powder: 1 tsp
- Coriander powder: 1 tsp
- Turmeric powder: ½ tsp
- Mustard seeds: ½ tsp
- Cumin seeds: ½ tsp
- Rock Salt as per taste
Method
- Soak Arhar dal overnight (8 hours).
- Strain the water, place the dal in a vessel, add 2 cups of water.
- Add tumeric to the dal water and boil the dal.
- For masala, blend the tomatoes and garlic and make it a paste.
- Heat up a pan, roast mustard seeds in it.
- Once roasted, add chopped onion to it and roast it again.
- Once the onions turn brown, add the tomato-garlic paste to the mix and saute well.
- Add coriander powder, red chilli powder, kasuri methi and cook them for 5-10 min in low flame.
- Add any other dried masala of your choice if needed.
- Add the dal to the masala, mix well and cook for another 15 min.
Your oil free tadka dal is ready to serve!

Food group: Legumes
Lentils can be easily combined with other food groups (except dairy and fruits).
The whole versions of our standard daals are much better versions than the split versions - and they act as bodybuilders, so are great for growing toddlers.
Cooking them oil free ensures, there is lower digestive load on our bodies to eliminate the harmful effects of refined oil.
