My 75year old Father-in-law has a severe case of sciatica accompanied with varicose veins. He gets plenty physical exercise through the day. He has been a complete non-vegetarian all his life. It will be tough for him to give that up. Any suggestions on what can be added to his diet to support healing? Right now he is on anti-inflammatory and pain killer medicines.

Read moreSciatica Pain and varicose veins can be cured through a clean diet and positive attitude. Removal of non veg is a must infact!! In the meanwhile you can do the below:
1. If he can’t give up non veg, source the best for him, such that it’s hormone free. Evaluate your vendors. Choose organic.
2. Give him vegetable salad before his non veg meal as enzymes of raw veggies will help in digesting the non veg. If possible add veggies in non veg too, lightly steamed ones.
3. Ideally eat non veg alone, don’t combine with any grains. Or replace rice with samak rice (barnyard millet) and wheat roti with amaranth atta roti.
4. Eat only fruits till noon everyday to support cleansing of body.
5. Ensure at least 50% of lunch and dinner is raw.
It all depends on how much he is willing to change anything in his lifestyle at this age. If he is willing, please remove animal products from his diet and keep him on a fruit breakfast to start with and snack him on plenty of fruit juices, smoothies, tender coconut and this will restore him back to normal.
Hi.. I have found doing any changes for parents a big challenge too. However, over a period of time these are the things they have picked up, which has helped in my father's piles and mother's overall health. A lot of their changes has happened because I I added these changes for everyone, as a family. And my biggest learning was, do not project any food as 'healthy' food. Just place it on table, as one of the things along with others - and its most likely to get accepted. 'Aaj yeh bana hai, aap try karoge?' works better!
A few things which was easy to get them to change:
- Starting day a with lots of fruits. They still love their cooked breakfast - but the first few hours is soaked raisings, fruit only smoothie and sometimes a bowl of fruits
- Adding veg juice pre meal - this was not an easy one. But now as I get mine made, I have asked the house cook, to make for them too. And so daily atleasy a glass goes in!
- Adding sprouts and raw salads in each meal - I add some nut based flavours at times. I noticed, that now my father necessarily wants some salad in each meal
- Getting them off dairy - this was easy for my mom, took longer with my dad. But overall we do not use much dairy at home. Father was having a glass each day, but noticed that it does aggravate his piles, so finally he has reduced this. If your FIL is worried about calcium etc - encourage him to sprinkle sesame seeds and grounded nut powders in his meals
- Early meals at night - this took the longest, and is still a challenge at times - but then I started to have early meals with my son - so now mostly the kitchen is getting wound up by 8 / 830. My father still likes to have this late! So there are somethings which I have made peace with too :)
- Replcing grains with more options - so I introduced chillas, and amaranth atta, and millets. Mom took it up well, Father still likes his roti at night! Does take amaranth roti once in a while. So this has been a bit slow too - but again focus is on addition and variety
My parents soak up the son, do yoga, and connect with nature a lot on regular basis - these are habits which I inculcated from them, so thankfully no coaxing there!
Overall in terms of foods - I just made sure, the focus is on additions of lots of raw, fresh seasonal foods for everyone in the family
Hope this helps!
There is saying"There is no right way of doing a wrong thing"
One can't transcend nature's law. Current condition indicates high levels of toxins in the body. There are two ways ideally remove the cause through correction on food and lifestyle. This will bring lot of relief.
Second manage which you are trying to do with medication and exercise. You can add good serving of raw fruits, veggies, sprouts and coconut.
First meal should be fruits not like a dessert but a meal. 500-600 GM's of fruits should be consumed. One may start with less but gradually build appetite .
Second, add a good serving of salad (1/3rd of the meal) during lunch and dinner
Also, reduce grain intake and ideally avoid in dinner
We have been conditioned to eat certain foods and it does take time to overcome
Others have given very relevant answers. Try to make vegan food at home which tastes similar to non veg. You can try lentils, mushrooms, jackfruit which give a somewhat similar taste. Besan chills with kala namak gives an omelette taste. Try different substitutes (healthy ones).
Food is just one aspect. He should look at other lifestyle factors like sunshine, deep breathing, positivity, meditation, social circle, keeping active, hobbies etc to better his health. But I am afraid without reduction of heavy to digest food like non veg, results will be not much.
1. Plenty of lime water through out the day.
2. Reduce animal protein and spices intake by increasing salad with it.
3. One glass of green vegetable juice daily, start with cucumber and gradually switch to spinach and wheatgrass.
4. Two to three amla daily.
5. Trifala one spoon twice a day.
6. Switch to only fruits snack.
7. Two square inch coconut piece, two almonds, two walnuts daily. Dry fruit to be soaked in water for 10-12 hours.
