What are those top 10 daily or weekly habits that one should start in their life to get the benefits of natural health and cure? We know we should not eat toxic food etc but one can't suddenly leave a habit or taste buds formed in years, so need to know the small changes one can make which are easy to adopt and realistic.

Hi. Pick one habit at a time, follow it for 10 days & then add the next. As you change your habits, your taste buds will change!! Which one you want to pick first, depends on you. I will say start with the easiest and then keep picking up more & more difficult ones.

Here's my list of 10 -

  1. Replace tea/coffee with healthy teas or drinks.
  2. Replace cooked breakfast with fruits.
  3. Have vegetable juice every noon & evening.
  4. Have raw veggie salads with lunch & dinner, atleast 50% to be raw. OR have cooked lunch & raw dinner.
  5. Replace milk with nut milk.
  6. Replace wheat roti with other grain rotis / dosas / chillas.
  7. Replace white salt with rock salt - this is very easy to do as there is no change in the taste.
  8. Replace packaged snacks with roasted makhanas, peanuts, chana, murmure, seeds, nuts, fruits, salads, etc.
  9. Avoid white sugar products like mithaai, cakes, pastries.
  10. Replace evening snacks with fruits.

Hi! I can relate to your question and concern. I have been facing the same in my attempt to move towards a health/natural lifestyle. Initially, I use to ask others what they were doing - that sometimes motivated me and other time frustrated me (for not being able to adopt those habits). Now, I have figured out that it's great to find out about all the possible healthy habits, but one needs to tweak it around as per his/her own context/preference/ability/comfort etc.

Few habits I have worked around -

  • Tea - Honestly, I haven't quit my regular tea. But yes, I have reduced the frequency. I sometimes have herbal tea as a substitute (and now I enjoy it, plan to quit the regular tea completely)
  • Taste buds for the obviously 'unhealthy stuff' - I try to experiment with a look-alike healthier option of the unhealthy, familiar food that we are used to enjoying. For example, I tried making a pizza look-alike with think bajra roti base and homemade tomato sauce (with gud, oregano & chilli flakes). I sprinkled cashew powder to give it a cheesy look. Taste? Well! it surely wasn't a dominos' but then my family (even kids) enjoyed eating the indigenous pizza! But yes, once in a while a regular pizza is also enjoyed at home (guilt-free).
  • Fruits - I ensure that I have fruits right in the morning as well as in the evening. This way I know that I am helping my body with healthy stuff and not just the tasty stuff. Btw now I have started relishing fruits even more. And yes, I made another discovery - when you start eating the right food your body relishes and asks for more of it and then its not difficult to fight temptations!
  • Sugar - substituted with jaggery and khand. No more refined white sugar.
  • Salt - Now use only rock salt, no table salt.
  • Salads - Have never been a salad person. But now, I ensure that I am eating some raw veggies along with ever cooked meal - simple or elaborate, depending upon time, mood and preference. Again, now I love my salads!
  • Balancing out - when I know I will be eating outside/junk I try to balance out by fasting and/or lots of raw veggies.
  • Veggie Juices - I know they are a great way of getting rid of toxins from the body. Trying to inculcate in my daily routine.

Plus I do keep reading and exploring natural health blogs/groups as I believe that knowledge/awareness is the first step towards adopting healthier choices!

My suggestion is that you start with what comes easily to you instead of adopting a complete lifestyle change. Gradually, you will adapt to the changes and keep adding on! All the best!

I shall share the followings, food is just one part of it, never the whole.

  1. Maximum exposure to outdoor without irritating the skin to maximize solar radiation input.

  2. Maximum time spent outdoor, in the morning, to maximize the fresh air inputs from the green during their photosynthesis.

  3. Eating the water in form of fruits more than the direct water. Sip water, only when thirsty.

  4. Eating more and more RAW food. Make a rule of having a raw, when you are hungry, for sure.

  5. Being physically active always, to move the lymphatic fluid where the toxins accumulate a lot.

  6. Taking care of spine for its balance and integrity.

  7. Going to bed as closer to 9 pm, as possible. Sleeping without alarm is important.

  8. Rational sexual understanding. The linkage of sex with procreation is needed. It is a pleasure with a purpose.

  9. Rational dialectical understanding of life.

  10. Dialectical understanding and practice of Meditation.

Excellent question and a common thing we all struggle with! By experience, I will second what everyone else has already said, focus on one thing at a time. In my case I eventually figured that I must focus on additions, the deletions will automatically happen. These are my top 10 commandments (I would actually just focus on the first 6 to begin with)

Remember the mantra is 'Focus on additions, and not the eliminations!' The things you have to cut out will happen slowly and steadily

  1. Adda lot of fruits in daily intake - this was easier for me as am a fruit lover, but even my husband who never had any fruits at all in childhood, found this easy to do. Easiest way to do this is begin the day with fruits, lots of them, about 2-3 rounds. Till noon. Initially you may just be able to sustain till about 10/ 11 am - thats ok. This was also easy to do for the child! Children love fruits naturally
  2. Move to 2 cooked meals: So the morning breakfast got replaced with fresh juicy live foods ie fruits! the rest of the meals remained as is
  3. Add raw / salads to every cooked meal: The idea is to increase the portion of hydrating, live foods in daily intake. An easiest way to do this add salads with the 2 cooked meals. Initially this was kheera tamatar pyaaz. Slowly and steadily we added nut based dips, more variety in terms of what we consumed as raw
  4. Adding fruit in evening snack too: In between meals, I keep the fruits handy, and so does hubby. He finds it easy to eat fruits on busy days in snack in evening. Even if you want to have your chaat/ other snacky items indulge in it at times, do not deprive but the idea again is to consume more live foods less of dead, foodless foods
  5. Adding wholesome nuts & sprouts: This came in a bit late - but I realised for that taste we all are seeking nuts are great ways to enhance that. Plus the logic that nature has meant us to eat whole foods (nuts vs. refined) set the focus on this addition. We add a lot of variety of nuts in salads during meals. Nut based dips & chutneys are such lovely ways to add that zing (and exclude the salty oily achar!). Cashew cream (ie kaju+ water simply) adds such oomph to daals, and curries, and soups
  6. Sleeping in ryhtm of nature: Biggest learning is, its not about food, its about ensuring body has enough sleep & rest time to assimilate all this lovely food & emotions we throw its way! So big change was to start hitting bed by 9/ 10 pm!
  7. Removing dairy: This happens step by step. My 2 glasses of milk daily stopped immediately. slowly the milk chai got replaced by usual herbal tea. Frequency of paneer also reduced. I still indulge in this once a while - but over the years the yearning has gone down!
  8. Removing packaged foods: Anything in bottle, that can stay longer than a week, is not natural food! So the focus here was to replace regular table salt/ sugar with healthier substitutues. refined oil with better cold pressed oils. Maggi/ biscuits / laddos - all have gotten replaced by a variety of natural based sweets / crackers. Once I understoodall of this is dead food, I just couldnt bear to get it home and feed it myself/ my child!
  9. Eating non veg with awareness: So officially I still have non veg occassionally. but then the idea is to balance it with a lot of raw live foods (again!) and not mix with grains if possible.
  10. Adding sunshine & oxygen in your diet: Oh yes, this also happened spontaneously. All the above changes helped me sleep better, and then get up earlier. I had more energy to go out for walks and yoga. I loved slowing my pace and soaking up the sun.

My biggest addition has been that of staying connected to a community of natural health enthusiasts. Instead of doing the journey alone, I ensured I have ppl to seek inputs & ideas from!

I still enjoy my pizzas, and pastas, and maggi once in a while - but I indulge with a lot of awareness that I have to balance it with increased fruits, raw salads and juices in coming week
