My friend's 4 1/2 year old daughter doesn't want to drink milk. She gets a stomach ache after drinking milk. I understand we can give yogurt, cheese as substitutes for calcium. But would anyone know how much quantity to give. Is there some chart to understand how much quantity approximately of let's say yogurt or any other item with calcium be consumed to reach daily calcium requirement.

You don't need to have milk to meet calcium requirements. The fact that the child is getting stomah pain shows that she is not able to digest it well. In fact , 3 in 4 Indians cant digest milk products well. Give the child a varied diet of fruits, veggies and nuts and calcium requirement is autmatically taken care of. Greens, beans and nuts are high in calcium too.

Hi, I completely understand your need of calcium for your child.  There are many other sources of calcium,  specially in leafy vegetables. If you still feel that milk is important,  start giving her milk in the night before sleep. And you can also add variety of other milk like almond or cashew milk.

Replace animal milk with almond milk. Sesame seeds (til) are calcium rich, sprinkle in her roti or sabzi. So is raagi, she can eat ragi roti or porridge or laddoos. In veggies - palak bhindi shalgam brocolli sarson. In fruits - Raisins, oranges, guava, strawberries, etc. There is ample non dairy choice for calcium dear. Don’t worry, just add a variety of whole plant based foods to her diet. And ensure she soaks the sun. Vitamin d helps in absorbing calcium from foods..... google each of above for their calcium content, you will be at peace:-).

The number one cause of Type 1 diabetes in Children in India is Cow's milk. Now you will state that most of the people today who are 40 plus have had lot of milk in childhood. Yes even I have had milk and didn't suffer from Type 1 diabetes because I was lucky and so were others. Secondly our body was able to make necessary auto immune changes and our pancreas worked double time and we remained healthy. But today the most adulterated food in the market is milk. The output is four times the potential output as per the existing cattle population in our country. So where does this extra milk comes from, it is artificially made to meet the demand. Besides this the animal protein Casien in milk is the root cause as our body doesn't have the necessary tools (enzymes) to break it. Please visit the site nomilk.com to learn more about milk. This site is a non-profit site and a huge collection of articles and scientific study papers on milk.

Now the second aspect of Calcium. The linking of calcium with milk was done as a marketing strategy during World War II. The necessary calcium for our body during first year of growing up is provided best by breast feed, then second best from fruits and vegetables. Best is give fresh fruits and fresh vegetables juice. Google the list of calcium rich fruits and vegetables and make your own list as per season and local availability. Remember ORS - Original, Regional and Seasonal principle will always guide you perfectly.
