Keerai Masiyal (Mashed Mixed Greens) - simple side dish with the nutrition of greens!

This is a dish from Tamil Nadu. Keerai means greens and masiyal means mashed. Usually, a mix of different types of tender greens are bought fresh daily by vendors selling them on hand-drawn carts who make their rounds every morning. The mix of greens is then carefully cleaned and made into this quick, tasty masiyal to be relished with rice or millets.

Ingredients

  • Mixed greens: 4 bunches (methi, amaranthus, spinach work well, experiment with different greens)
  • Jeera: 1 tsp
  • Chana dal: 1 tsp
  • Red chilli: 1
  • Cold pressed coconut oil: ½ tsp

Method

  • Wash greens well in water.
  • Chop them fine.
  • Steam them for a few minutes in a steamer till cooked.
  • Mash well with a masher or run it in the mixie.
  • Heat the oil and add jeera, chana dal and red chilli.
  • Add to the masiyal and mix.
  • Add salt to taste.

  • Could be had with cooked meals. Remember not to club with fruits!
