Vitiligo is a skin disorder in which white patches of skin appear on different parts of the body. Melanin is the pigment that gives our skin color. This condition happens because the cells that make pigment (color) in the skin are destroyed. Vitiligo can also affect the mucous membranes (such as the tissue inside the mouth and nose) and the eyes. The exact cause is not known. Vitiligo is more of an autoimmune disease. These diseases happen when your immune system mistakenly attacks some part of your own body. In vitiligo, the immune system may destroy the melanocytes in the skin. There might be a possibility that one or more genes may make a person more likely to get the disorder. Vitiligo may also run in families. Signs and symptoms of vitiligo include white patches around armpits and groin (where the leg meets the body), around the mouth, eyes, nostrils, navel, genitals and rectal areas. Some natural remedies include: Turmeric Application ( Curcuma aromatica ) -Turmeric is an effective home remedy for vitiligo. Turmeric along with mustard oil and stimulate the pigmentation of the skin. Apply a mixture of turmeric powder and mustard oil for 20 minutes to the affected area. Do this twice a day for positive results. It may be best suggested for sunlight exposure after the application either in the early morning or late evening. A mixture of lemon and sweet basil extract might be useful but lacks evidence. A proper diet could prevent the condition from worsening it. Here are some foods that people with vitiligo have cited as helpful for their condition. Foods include bananas, apples, green leafy greens, such as kale or romaine lettuce, chickpeas, also known as garbanzo beans, root vegetables, especially beets, carrots, and radishes, figs and dates could be consumed in large quantities which could help in prevention. Foods to be avoided included, milk and milk products, non-vegetarian foods, brinjal, citrus fruits, oily and spicy food, sugared drinks, junk foods, etc. Avoid consumption of alcohol and tobacco or any other social drugs or unwanted medications. The practice of yoga and meditation could be helpful as well to reduce stress Get enough sound sleep which could reduce stress levels and could prevent the condition from aggravating.
